It was written by Walter C. Smith in 1867. He based it on I Timothy 1:7 -- "Now to the king eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God be glory and honor for ever and ever." It is a strong text of praise to God who created and sustains the lives of all His creatures.
The tune is St. Denio a traditional Welsh ballad popular in the early 19th century. It was first published as a hymn tune in 1839.
