WORLD MUSIC WITH DARIA

We had a special musical program for the kids at the library today.  Daria Marmaluk-Hajioannou played music from around the world.  The kids (and their parents) tried out dozens of musical instruments and played along with the concert.

Daria had a lovely voice and sang lots of great songs with the kids.

Part of the time I was in the workroom in the back singing along.  "Kum-ba-yah", "This Little Light of Mine", "In the Jungle", "La Bamba", "Guantanamera" and more.

These were some kind of rattles.  She also had rattles made of cartons and soda bottles with beads and other objects in them.

This boy is sitting on and playing a wooden drum.  He was good at it too.

Here Daria is playing little cymbals.

After Daria played and sang a song using this drum she gave it to this little boy to play.  He loved it.

Daria used a washboard to play along with her as she sang "Wabash Cannonball".  She was very talented.
It was a great program.  Very noisy, but very fun.

  3. @Marion -- It's not the library of our childhood, that's for sure!

  4. Your right. The only thing I remember Tacony haveing was a summer reading program when we were kids. I'm glad you are in this one. It's a lot more fun.

  5. Everyone has the Summer Reading Program. This is part of ours. The theme this year is "Discover Your World" with lots of ethnic programs. Tacony has more programs than Richmond does. As I said, it's not the same library system anymore.

  6. The washboard brought back memories. My mother attended college the same time that I did and she took a music class. In that class they had to make musical instruments. She made a washboard. She made lots of other instruments but I liked that one the best.

  7. @Cherdecor - your mother's class must have been similar to this lady. She had all kinds of homemade instruments. That is so great your mother was able to take that class. It is a class I would take.
