OCEAN CITY, NEW JERSEY -- DAY ONE

As you can tell from my last post we got a late start going to the shore.  But we finally got on our way around 2:30 p.m.  Much later than we had anticipated, but it's only an hour and a half to the Jersey shore, so we knew we would still have plenty of time.

Here's what it looked like when we first started smelling the ocean.

I could tell we were getting close because we started seeing sand mixed in with the dirt along the road.  When my sister and I were little and we went down the shore that is the way we always knew we were getting close.

There is a bay we have to go over to get to Ocean City.  The bridge is over a mile long.  When we were down here in September they were working on making a new and better bridge.  Here it is May and they are still working.

It was very exciting when Ocean City came into view.

We checked in and then went to our room.  Joe was happy to see the sign in the elevator that said the motel restaurant opened this past weekend.  They do a good breakfast here.

We were starving so we went to the boardwalk to get dinner.  All up and down the boardwalk were these beautiful red, white, and blue flowers.  I guess they were planted to celebrate Memorial Day next Monday.

It was very windy and cold on the boardwalk.  You can see how choppy the water was.

We were going to go to Del's Crabhouse for dinner, but it wasn't open.  Instead we went to Mack and Manco's.  There was an article in the Philadelphia newspaper last week that said the way to say "pizza" in Ocean City was "Mack and Manco's".  They have been in business since 1956 and have the best pizza anywhere.  I had a slice of mushroom and Joe got a couple of slices of white pizza.

This was on the wall in our booth.

After we ate we took a windy walk on the boardwalk.  There were all these seagulls around.  Lots of them.  They were not only flying around, they were hovering over people.  I've never seen anything like it.

Joe stopped to look in a t-shirt store.

We didn't know our cat Jenny had a store down here.

Joe loves Polish water ice.  The only place we know to get it is down the shore.  So he had a treat tonight.

You can see from the flags it was really windy.

 And was getting cold.

Besides, the sun was starting to set.

So we headed back towards the Music Pier.  That is our landmark because we turn there to go back to the motel.

And headed for our warm room for the night.

Good night!

My mother was from Ellsworth, PA and she talked about these places: it's good to finally be able to see them.

  2. I LOVE the beach pictures!! They would look great framed. It seems that even with the chilly weather, you are having a good time.
I was sorry to hear about the fire, but the firemen (& women) are
awesome! That is one hard job.
Hope you & Joe enjoy the trip!
ps Poor Jenny! Do you remember (in the 70's was it ?) when being 'bad' was good ?

  3. Val, glad you are enjoying the pictures. More coming.

Deb, Jenny would agree with you -- bad is good in her book. We are having a good time, but wish it were warmer so we could go on the beach.
