WHAT I'M READING

MY NAME IS MARIA ISABEL by Alma Flor Ada

undefined
About the book:
Mary Lopez....  Just because there are two other Marias in the class, why should Maria Isabel Salazar Lopez be the one the teacher decides to call Mary?  Maria Isabel loves her name and the fact that she is named after relatives whom she loves.  She also wants to do well in her new class in her new school.  But she finds "Mary" impossible to get used to.  When the teacher calls on her she fails to answer, not because Maria Isabel doesn't want to but because she doesn't realize the teacher is talking to her.  When all of this leads to Maria Isabel's being excluded from the school's Winter Pageant, she realizes that she has to do something.  But what?

My Name Is Maria Isabel is a poignant story about a child's pride in her heritage and the challenges of fitting in to a a new environment.  It is an important book for children in an increasingly multicultural America.

My thoughts:
OK, it's a kid's book.  I have been reading so much heavy stuff lately that I wanted to take a break with something light and easy.  Kids' books are so good and this one is no exception.  The lesson in this book is to respect and recognize everyone, no matter what their heritage is.  It is an excellent book for children and adults alike.  I definitely recommend it.
