WHAT I'M READING -- WHAT CHILD IS THIS? BY RHYS BOWEN (2018) -- 2021/8

Hello, friends!  Hope you are all having a wonderful day.  Can you believe it's the Saturday before Thanksgiving?  This year is quickly coming to a close.  I don't know about you, but when it gets around this time of the year it seems old and worn out.  I love the colors on the trees, the crisp air, the wonderful flavors and fall harvest.  But it is almost as if 2021 is saying, "I'm getting tired.  It's almost time for a new year to take over for me."  OK, you can laugh now.

These past two weeks have been quite the time for me with doctors, tests, etc.  On Thursday I went to my cardiologist for a chemical stress test.  It was different from ones I had done in the past.  A bit harder on me I think.  Maybe I'm getting old.  But I spoke to the doctor yesterday and all is well with this heart of mine.  I had a hard time yesterday with left over symptoms from the test, and I laid around most of the day doing nothing.  I did call the doctor's office, and they were super.  The nurse called me back three times to make sure I was OK and the doctor called me once.  Wow!  I have never had that kind of service before.  I am very happy with my new cardiologist.  I loved my old one, but unfortunately he died of Covid-19 last year.

The only thing I have left to do is go to the dentist on Monday and get a filling.  Then I am OK for the rest of the year.  After the holidays I will get my mammogram and then I should be all set.

Today I want to tell you about the latest book I read.  Actually it's a short story and I read the entire thing while I was waiting for the different parts of my cardiac test.  It was offered to me free with my Amazon prime.  Since Rhys Bowen is one of my favorite authors, I jumped at the chance to get it.  This is my first Christmas story of the year.  The title is "What Child is This?"

Jack and Maggie Harris are adrift on ravaged streets during the London Blitz. Their home is gone. They have nowhere to go and nothing left to lose. With only the memories of their greatest loss—the death of their child during a Christmas years before—Jack and Maggie settle in a seemingly deserted mansion for the night.

Inside they find shelter, warmth, and a bit of cheer. They also discover a surprise. Now, in the darkest of times, the unexpected compassion of strangers will make this Christmas one to remember forever.

I don't want to say too much about it and ruin it for you.  But what a surprise ending.  And you feel as if you are right there in the London Blitz.  It shows you what is really important in life.  And it's not how much money is in the bank or what your home looks like.  Yes, it's a feel good story but not in the way you would expect.  You will not regret reading this.

When the nurse came out to the waiting room and said it was time for me to come back for the last part of my test, I had just read the last words.  I looked at her with a smile on my face and said, "That was such a good book.  Thanks for waiting until I finished it to call me back."  She started laughing and said she was glad I had enjoyed it so much.

Basically I read the entire thing in less than an hour.  And now that I remembered how good Rhys Bowen is, I think I will have to get some more of her books to read in the new year.  (Too busy right now.)

I have to run.  Let me know if you read this.  Have a wonderful weekend.  I'll be back soon.

  3. Hi Kathy! Oh, I praise our mighty God that you had good results from your stress test! I've never had to do one. Sorry you were so wiped out the day after but you probably needed that rest. The book sounds nice. I'm sorry to say I don't read too much any more. I want to wish you a happy and blessed Thanksgiving.

  4. It sounds like a good book to read. I have enough books to read now. I finished reading Bunnicula book that Megan picked up for me at the library 3 weeks ago. Interesting and fun story. I'm glad your heart is good and kind Dr /nurse that kept in touch with you. Have a good weekend.

  5. Great to hear your results were good. So happy to hear your new doctor is on top of things with you....and that you like him! That always helps. I agree about the year. It does feel like a 'winding down'. Maybe a time to wrap up loose ends & start fresh in the new year? The book sounds interesting. I'm gonna look into it. Have a Happy Thanksgiving! (I'm thankful for your friendship)

  8. That books sounds like one I'd really enjoy. Dad was in the British army and my mom was in German occupied Belgium during the 2nd WW. Even if it's fictional, I love reading about that era...especially if it has a Christian message. Now I'm half way into an Ann Cleaves novel. One in her Shetland Island series. Love to read at night when we get in bed. My hubby goes off to sleep and then I cozy up with a book. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
