VETERANS DAY AND OTHER THINGS

 

Hello, friends!  Here I am alive but not kicking too well.  I went to the dentist yesterday for a regular cleaning.  My appointment was originally for August but cancelled because of COVID-19.  So yesterday was my rescheduled appointment.  I was glad to be going because on Sunday I started having a bad toothache.  My dentist that I had gone to for 12 years retired and sold her practice so this is a new business I am going to.  This is the fourth time I have been there.  I have been getting a different dentist each time, but now it seems as if the dentist I saw the last time is the regular one there.  I had her again today.

I really like this practice, even though my insurance does not cover it and I have to pay for it out of pocket.  After a couple of x-rays, a cleaning and a prescription for anti-biotics she told me if it does not clear up I have to see a specialist and it might involve an extraction.  NO!!  Not again.  It seems as if any tooth with a crown my old dentist put on is deteriorating.  That dentist died so I can't even go back and find out what was going on.  I guess crowns (or teeth) don't last forever.  Hopefully the antibiotics will work and this will be the end of it.

Today is Veterans Day in the U.S.  I have so many veterans in my family dating all the way back to the Revolutionary War.  I put out flags in my flower pot.  The red one is the Marine Corps flag for Joe and the blue one is the Navy for me.  I worked for the Navy for 4 years.  My dad, Joe's dad and Joe were in the Marines.  My step-dad was in the Navy and so was my friend, Paulette and my brother Michael.

Lots of places are giving away free lunches and dinners to the veterans.  Joe wants us to order from East Coast Wings and go pick it up for lunch.  We would just pay for my lunch.  I have to see what I can eat by that time.

I noticed that I never told you about Halloween.  Or did my "Welcome to November" post.  My health has really hindered my blogging.  I am so glad you are all sticking around for my hit or miss posts.  I will try to get at least one more post up this week.

Let me at least tell you about Sunday here.  One week at the Ladies Bible Study we were saying how sad it was that we had to cancel Homecoming Sunday this year.  I said it was a shame we couldn't have just a little lunch for the people who usually come on Sunday.  Well, that idea grew and people ran with it.  The next thing I knew a lunch was planned and people were really excited.  There were only 9 people who showed up, but we all had fun.  Well...  I was starting to feel sick so I didn't have a lot of fun, but the food was really good.  Joe made rigatoni, I made an apple pie.  Besides that there was roast pork, mixed vegetables, parsley potatoes, lemon meringue pie, homemade chocolate chip cookies, Louisiana Crunch cake, and spice cake. I know I am forgetting something.  Both the ladies and the men in our congregation really know how to cook!

And now I have to go get ready to go to the doctor's.  It is so hard to get to see her these days.  I'm glad I could get an appointment.  I'll be back later.  I have all these blog posts in my head.  If only I can get them online!

CELEBRATING VETERANS DAY

Hello, friends!  I took the above picture back in 2014 at the farm I used to go to every week.  I haven't been there in so long.  In fact, I don't think I went there even once this year.  Since we got the new Shoprite and everything is so fresh there (and much cheaper than the farm), I just haven't made the long ride down there.  But maybe I will take a trip before the year is over.

That is if the weather warms up.  It is cold!  I didn't leave the house yesterday and probably won't today either except for a quick trip to Rite Aid to get a couple of things I desperately need.

One thing I must work on today is laundry.  Do you ever have those clothes just pile up?  It is out of hand.  Joe usually does the laundry because he loves it.  I have not figured out why, but he does.  But with his hand injured, I've been doing it.  I don't mind it, but I can't carry as many clothes down to the basement at one time as he does.

I thought I would bake some cookies today too.  The ready to bake are so easy and the pumpkin ones are one of my favorites.  You can buy them only around this time of year too.  I might get another package next week to hold me through to Christmas.

But let me tell you what we did on Monday, Veterans Day.  That afternoon, as usual, we went to the Nursing Home.  Again, it was a good time visiting with the residents and Joe gave a meditation on Psalm 7.  He has been going through the Psalms but is going to take a short break for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  I was able to give out some large print devotionals and was asked to bring more next week.

After we left Joe, Rick and I headed to King George II Inn in Bristol, PA.  A lot of places were giving the veterans free meals or free coffee or free dessert which was wonderful.  King George was giving a free dinner to the veterans from a special menu.  Of course they couldn't choose the $35 filet mignon, but the menu they could choose from was quite extensive.  I had called several other places to get a reservation, but most of them were full.  I was fortunate to get in here and only did because we were coming early.

I love taking pictures of the Delaware River.  This is the view we had as we walked from the parking lot to the restaurant.  All uphill I might add.  This girl was having a hard time with it.

We were seated at a table right next to the window on the first floor.  I sat with my back to the window so that Rick could see out.  He is not from Philly and has been there only once before.  The view is impressive and he loves looking at it.  I did turn around and take a couple of pictures, though.  I was using my phone and so the pictures are not as clear as I would have liked.

The lights are from an outside patio they have.  In the summer they have live music there and you can sit and have your dinner at the cute little café.

And here is Joe our Marine.  There are no former or retired Marines.  Once a Marine, always a Marine.  I know this from my dad, my father-in-law and Joe -- all Marines.

Joe had the salmon dijonaisse.  We served it at his birthday party we had there last year.  It is wonderful.  Rick had the mahi mahi tacos and I had the fish and chips.  There are no bad meals at this place.  Everything was wonderful and freshly made.  Rick's fries were cold and when he told a waitress (not even ours), she took them away and brought him another plate of hot fries taken right from the pan.  Impressive!

We watched the sun set as we ate and by the time we left, not only was the sky all pink, purple and gold, but so was the water.  I tried so hard to get a decent picture and saw it in my camera, but it came out blurry.  Still, you can get the idea.

It's such a wonderful place to have dinner.  So calm, beautiful and peaceful.  I took one last picture as I followed these guys back to the car.

It has been a wonderful week.

VETERANS DAY

On this day I always think about those in my family who stepped up and served in the armed forces.  I think of my dad in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.  I think of my step-father serving in the Pacific during World War II.  I remember my father-in-law serving in Viet Nam.  I had a cousin who died in a Japanese prison camp.  I had a great-great-great-grandfather killed during the Civil War.  I had ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War.  And beyond that in Europe before my family came to America in 1622.

My brother, Michael, was in the Navy.  Brother David was in the Army.  And my brother, Joe, was in the Coast Guard.

All are special people.  It is sad that there are wars in the world and that the military is necessary.  But the pride of having someone willing to serve when the need arises is great.

Here is my special Marine today.  My husband Joe.

He belongs to a Veterans group that meets across the street from our house.  They were going to a ceremony this afternoon, so he got all ready.

Joe has been given the privilege of laying the wreath on the monument for those who didn't come back.  I am so proud of him.  I wanted to go and take pictures, but realized there was no way with my bad back and legs I could stand for an hour.  So he went with the guys which is a good thing.

I hope you all remember those special people in your life today too.  Leave a little message about some of them for me if you will.  I would love to read about them.

VETERANS' DAY AND A BIBLE STUDY BRUNCH

I had off from work today because it was Veterans' Day.

I come from a large military family who have fought in every war since the Revolutionary War in 1776.  I'm so proud of them.

Since I wasn't working I planned on having a brunch to end our Ladies' Bible Study for the season.  We do not have study over the winter but will start up again in March.  We met at 10 a.m. and stayed until noon.  There was so much food!  I brought eggs and scrambled them in the church kitchen.  I brought turkey sausage and low-sodium bacon which Carol so thoughtfully cooked for me.  Carol and Dottie brought juice.  Debbie brought bagels and cream cheese.  Gennie brought muffins.  Margie brought all kinds of fruit.  We had so much food we could not eat it all.

Here we are eating.  We invited the husbands too.  Only Margie's husband, Rick, showed up.  Joe was going to come, but got an upset stomach and didn't want to be around food.  I can't say that I blame him.  Pastor Justin showed up too so Rick wasn't the only guy there.

Our group has taken on Linda (from Linda's Life Journal) and her family as our prayer project.  We pray for them each week.  So she had her 2 1/2-year-old grandchildren (quads) make us bookmarkers.  All of us were thrilled.  We had Pastor Justin take a picture of us.

We had so much fun and I think this is going to turn into an annual thing.

VETERANS DAY

I had off from work today for Veteran's Day.  Did you thank a veteran for their service today?  Being a part of the military is a hard job.  I know so many veterans and they are all heroes to me.

This picture was taken at dinner tonight.  We went to Applebee's where Joe got a free dinner for being a veteran.  It was very, VERY crowded.  I felt as if I were in boot camp or something, there were so many men in khakis, camouflage and wearing dog tags and military jackets.  I had to pay for my meal, but my sister had given us a gift card for our anniversary, so technically my meal was on her.

I spent most of today at the hospital.  Today was the day I had my Zometa infusion and my mammogram.  My favorite nurse, Dawn, was the one to give me the infusion.  She is so good I never even felt the needle going in.  And she found the vein the first try.  I got nauseous on the medicine though (as usual) and was pretty "green" when I got to the x-ray department.  When I got home I laid down and slept for awhile before we went out to dinner.  Needless to say, I couldn't eat the whole meal, but now I have lunch for tomorrow!

For my Friday View this week I thought I would show you the hospital campus.  It is a big place with lots of beautiful landscaping.  The trees are all turning colors and it was very pretty.

I'm still not 100% so I am going to bed.  By tomorrow morning I will be fine.  And it's the last farm day of the season, so I have to get up early to get there before everything is picked over.  Be looking for a picture of the haul tomorrow.
