LARRY'S PHOTOS -- SAND SCULPTING

It's time for another installment of my brother Larry's photos.  With all the cold weather we've been having I thought I would take you to a warm place -- Atlantic City, NJ during June of last year to see the Sand Sculpting Contest.

Doesn't this look so nice and warm?  It's keeping me going.  It is going to get warm again, isn't it?

These sculptors are so talented.  I don't think I would have the heart to put so much work into something that would go out with the tide.  Hope you enjoyed seeing them.

THE SUNDAY GARDEN

Yes, it's that time of year where I will begin to show you "how my garden grows."

Look, just a little bit of snow and some dead grass.  And sunshine.  I'm going to look at it while I can since there is a major snowstorm coming tomorrow and it will be all snow and ice again.

 

I was glad to see the gazing ball and my ceramic mushrooms made it through the storms.  I forgot to bring them in.

We filled the bird feeder and suet cage today.  Then I watched the birds from inside the house.  I had moved the feeder closer to the house and wanted to make sure they found it.  It didn't take long until there were a bunch of sparrows there.

 

 These pictures aren't the best because I took them through two panes of glass, but you get the idea.

No color in the garden now.  It all looks kind of blah.  But in a few weeks (hopefully) there will be a lot of color to show you.

I will have some color in the house soon though.  My Easter Cactus is about to bloom.

I'm not sure, but I think there may be two!

HAVE A LOVELY DAY TODAY

How many times a day do you hear the phrase "Have a nice day"?  Or if you are in retail or public service as I am, how many times a day do you say it?  It must be at least 30 or 40 times a day I say those words or have them said to me.  But do I really mean it?  Do I really want the person I'm speaking with to have a nice day?  Or is it just something to say?  Or maybe, like me, it is some of both.

When did we begin to say this phrase?  I don't remember people saying it when I was little.  Someone told me it came about with the "smiley face".  If you remember, the phrase "have a nice day" was written around the outside of that face.

 Now you see the phrase EVERYWHERE!

 

As a side note, Joe knows the guy who first drew the smiley face with the words "Have a Nice Day" around it.  He had it copyrighted and got paid for awhile.  Then someone drew the face without the words.  And another person used the words without the face.  This broke the copyright and so now it is used all over and he gets nothing.  So sad.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is we (I at least) should really want people to have a nice day.  Even the ones who are mean and nasty to us.  Maybe I should step it up a little to what the calendar page says and tell people to "have a lovely day today."
