A RAINY LABOR DAY

So much for having a cook out today.  It is pouring!  We need the rain so badly that I can't complain. But so much for grilling.  It all worked out though.  So glad I have a big kitchen!

I slept in today and then spent the rest of the day cleaning up.  I didn't get everything done, but I made a big dent in things.

Around 5:00 p.m. our friends Walt and Carole came over.  We sat in the kitchen, looked at the clouds and rain and had a wonderful dinner.  I made barbecued pork chops, mashed sweet potatoes and a green salad.  They brought beef short ribs and apple and cherry pies.  My oh my were we ever full. Everything was so good.  I was going to take pictures, but we were having such a good time I forgot all about it.  But take my word for it, it was great.

So the rain really didn't stop anything.  Back to work tomorrow.

T-SHIRT SUNDAY

The day before Labor Day is t-shirt Sunday at the church I attend.  It's a fun time we have where everyone who has one wears their church t-shirt to morning service.  It started about three years ago when the Sunday before Labor Day a lot of people (including me) turned up for service in their t-shirts.  We hadn't planned it that way, it just happened.  Ever since then every Labor Day weekend we wear the shirts.



You can tell who wears their shirt a lot and who doesn't.  Bud's looked brand new.  Sydney's, on the other hand, was faded and hardly had any of the logo left.  I asked him what happened to his shirt's logo.  He said it had lo-gone!  Ha, ha, ha!

Since we have a new logo we are getting new shirts.  Almost everyone signed up to get one.  We have a lot of new people from last year so only 9 people had a blue shirt.  This way next year everyone that wants one will have it to wear.

Yesterday my friend, Debbie, and I went to Greensgrow Farm.  I'm getting back into the habit of going every other week like I used to.  I spent $14 which wasn't bad and got quite a lot.

 

I got four sweet potatoes, a candy onion (ever have one of those?  They are sweet like vidalias), a white eggplant, an heirloom tomato, four ears of corn, a head of boston lettuce (it's hydroponic) and an Asian pear.  Ever eat an Asian pear?  Its sort of a cross between a pear and an apple and so good.  I also got myself some flowers.  We had a salad of the lettuce, tomato and Asian pear for dinner last night.  It was great.

EQUAL

I really had a hard time trying to decide what to post today.  It's September first so I thought I would do my "turn the calendar page" post.  But I also went to the farm and thought I would share about that.  What to talk about?  I'll talk about the calendar first.   Look for the farm post tomorrow.

I really do have an equal opportunity kitchen.  I love to cook.  I love trying new recipes and new fruits and veggies.  (Not so much new meat.)  Joe was a cook in the Marine Corps and a baker in civilian life so he's not so bad in the kitchen either.  Let me tell you he makes the best scrambled eggs I have ever eaten.  And I mean the BEST.  And French toast -- oh my how good.

Joe doesn't do as much cooking as he used to.  He has essential tremor which makes his hands shake (sort of like Parkinson's) so it's difficult for him to do things.  But last week on one of my late nights (Tuesday and Thursday I work till 8 p.m.) he was able to put some chicken on a cookie sheet, put barbecue sauce over it and put it in the oven.  When I came home all I had to do was make the veggies and dinner was ready.  And really good too.  Now that's what I call equal.
