THROWBACK THURSDAY

And so life goes on in my household.  Nothing really happening.  Just day to day life -- get up, work, make dinner, bed.  I'm looking forward to a three day weekend, though.  So in order for you not to be too bored with this blog, I am doing a Throwback Thursday for you.

Here is a picture that I found on Old Images of Philadelphia.  The year is 1923 and the beginning of a new bridge spanning the Delaware River between Philadelphia and Camden, New Jersey is just starting to be built.

It was originally called the Delaware River Bridge, but is known now as the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.  I see it all the time driving on I-95 (which runs along the river's edge) and use it when I am coming back from the New Jersey shore.

It must have been a marvel in its day.  Thanks for taking a look back with me.  Hopefully I'll find something to write about soon!

THROWBACK THURSDAY

I was looking at some old posts and found my Throwback Thursdays.  I haven't done one in forever.  I still have some pictures archived that I haven't showed you, so thought I would share one today.

This is the view from City Hall's tower facing the northwest part of the city.  The first is the view from 1915 and the second is the same view from 2007.  My how things have changed!

THROWBACK THURSDAY

I am getting ready to head out the the dentist and will post about that later today.  But I wanted to show you today's throwback picture.  This is Frankford Hospital (now known as Aria Frankford Campus) which is located near where I live.  The first shot is in 1908 and the second is today.  My, how times change.

Just as a side note, not only have I been treated in this hospital, both my sister Elaine and my brother David were born here.

THROWBACK THURSDAY

Have I got a picture for you today.

This is Geno's Steaks, a Philadelphia landmark and in front of it a 1959 Chevy.  Anyone remember that?  I used to think this was the most beautiful car.  And a convertible too!  But having ridden in a convertible I now know it's not all that great.  Especially if you don't want your hair messed up.  And the car looks huge!  I don't think I could even drive it.  Ah, times change, don't they?  I wonder what people 50 years from now will think of our cars.

THROWBACK THURSDAY

Everyone seemed to like the Throwback Thursday I did last week, so I have found some others for you.  I hope you enjoy them.

People in this part of the U.S. know of Tastykake Bakery for producing great cakes and pies.  I don't think they are still delivered in this type of truck.  This is a picture from 1915.

THROWBACK THURSDAY

This picture went up on the Free Library's facebook page.  I thought it was a great picture, so borrowed it, then googled to find a picture of the same spot today.  Well, it's the same corner, just looking in a different direction.  I had a lot of trouble finding it, and this was the best I could do.

The picture is of 13th and Market Streets here in Philly.  This is where Macy's is today.  Many years ago it was Wanamaker's which was THE place to shop.  It has a large statue of an eagle inside on the first floor.  Many, many people would say "Meet you at the eagle" when they would want to find someone.

So here is 13th and Market in 1928:

And here is 13th and Market today:

Looking at these two I realize it really hasn't changed that much!  The joys of living in a historic city.  I love it!
