TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY

I finally got a chance to stay home on Tuesday.  And most of the day I slept.  I did get a chance to work in the kitchen a little bit.  A very little bit, but at least I did something.  I put the storm window in the back door.  Boy, did that make a difference.  So much warmer now.  And I cleaned up that back corner.

The only place I went yesterday was to Rite Aid to get my medicine.  But of course you know it wasn't just that.  Not with 75% off all Christmas stuff.  I got a box of cookies for church on Sunday for $1.75.  In fact, I'm going back tomorrow to get another one.  And I got a cute snowman for $1.00 that I can use to decorate this month.

When we came back from Rite Aid I saw that the houses across the street were still lit up with Christmas lights.  Except now they have snowflakes and snowmen.  Cute!

Since I have no where I have to go tomorrow I plan to getting some phone calls made, visit a few places to get the paperwork I need for my pension meeting next week, and get some more cleaning crossed off of my list.

Here's my 5:00 p.m. picture for Tuesday.  It's pretty.

I am still able to get my work email and so I saw yesterday that one of my very good friends from my days at Northeast Regional Library had passed away and the funeral was this morning.  I called my friend, Carol, who I had also worked with there and we decided to go together.  I got to her house and she knew where the funeral home was so she drove.  I think the entire library turned out.  The room was packed with family, friends and co-workers.  Every seat was taken and people were standing three deep around the room.  Bernadette was the sweetest, nicest woman you could possibly imagine.  She would do anything for you if it would help you.  I know she is sorely missed.

I was surprised when I saw the handout that she was born the same year I was.  For some reason I always thought she was much older than me.  When Carol looked at it and said, "She was only 62,"  I thought, "No way!"  It made me stop and think.  I've been missing my job, but now I realized that could be me.  It could be any of us.  It was a wake-up call for me that life really is short and I am glad I decided to leave the stress from my job and live my life.  It's just taking an adjustment for me to change my thinking from work to home.

We went back to Carol's house and I headed off to the library.  I had some things to return.  Besides that I had left my sweater and two notebooks there and had forgotten to return my keys to the building.  Oops!  No one was concerned about me having the keys but I didn't want to be holding on to them.

It was so nice seeing my friends again.  I brought them a bag of pretzels (I always provided the pretzels) and talked to them for awhile.  Diane asked me to help her figure out the monthly schedule for February.  I sat down at my old desk and began explaining to her how to do it.  The next thing I knew I had put together the entire schedule.  I think we were both surprised!

I met my friend, Donna, there.  We had planned to have lunch together today.  So we took off and went to Chick-Fil-A.  It was nice to have a lunch we didn't have to rush through.  We sat there for over an hour and just talked and talked.  Then we both had to go food shopping so we headed across the street to Shop Rite.

Neither of us needed a lot so we shared a cart.  We went through the store a lot more quickly than I expected us to.  I got a week's worth of groceries for only $50.00.  That's about $15.00 less than I usually do.  Good job, Kathy!

I took Donna home, and then came home myself.  I started to unload the groceries, got part-way done, and just had to lay down.  I was exhausted.  I stretched out on the sofa and the next thing I knew it was 1 1/2 hours later.  I didn't know I was THAT tired.  I got the rest of the food put away (with Joe's help) and got dinner together.  I had bought rotisserie chicken and macaroni salad so it was easy to do.  After dinner I laid down again and went back to sleep while Joe cleaned up.  I guess I overdid it today.

Here's tonight's 5:00 p.m. photo:

I'm about to go back to sleep again.  I'm tired all the time.
Until later

Kathy

  1. Hi - I'm Carol from Scotland. I thought I'd comment as I've been retired for eight years now. I think it took about a year before I stopped having to have an afternoon nap. The exhaustion from all the stress that came from my job was so extreme that I couldn't take on anything else that required an extra commitment.

I was advised by friends who'd been through the retirement process that it is better to wait for a year before undertaking anything really new and absorbing. The year helped me to focus on my new life and what I wanted it to be. I found that I needed to have a learning challenge in the winter so that I'd develop new skills for the better weather.

I hope you start to feel less tired soon and enjoy your retirement as much as I have. It's wonderful to have the time to do something thoroughly and not to make it fit into the time available after work.

    1. Thank you, Carol! You are not the first person to tell me that. My friend Carol (here in Philly!) who retired two years ago said it took a good six months for her to not feel tired all the time. It's been one week for me, so I guess I'm doing OK! I did have a high stress job and health problems on top of it, so I think I'm doing good. Your words are SO ENCOURAGING to me. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I hope you will stop back soon and comment again. All the best to you!

  2. Yay! The corner looks great! Baby steps are still steps. I am so happy for you. And that you were able to enjoy lunch out with Carol. I am sure you will enjoy your
new (retired) schedule which is no real 'schedule' at all. It warms my heart that you are catching up on much needed rest. Enjoy!

    1. Thanks, Debbie. I am keeping on with my "baby steps" as I can. I figure if I can do only one thing a day it's still one thing. But as I start to feel better I hope to do more.

I am a person that needs a schedule. ("It's 6 p.m. -- time for dinner." "It's 2 p.m. -- I'm going to read for an hour now.") Not everyone is that way, but I am. Once I figure out a schedule that works for me I will be a much happier camper.

  3. Hi Kathy! I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of your friend. You're so right, we don't know what tomorrow may bring so we should live each day to it's fullest and be prepared to meet Jesus. Thank you for popping in to see me and I love the outdoor snaps around your home and your neighborhood. If I haven't said it already, Happy New Year! ;)
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  4. It's been 5 years since I worked. It wasn't a nice exit....I had enough and said, see us....but it took months to feel like I was worth anything. My life was so tied to my job. It's so much better now and many of my former coworkers say how much better/good I now look ...lack of extreme stress is so good!! Enjoy each day....it will get better :)
