THE BIRTHDAY CAKE... ER.... CAKES

We have a custom at work.  When it is one of our birthdays the rest of the group buy a card (which we all sign) and a cake.  We get together sometime during the day and sing "Happy Birthday" and all get to have a piece of the cake.  A nice little tradition, right?  So I knew when I went back to work on Tuesday (after taking my birthday off on Monday) that I would get a cake.  It was just a matter of what time of day I would be ambushed.

Bob and I came in the same time on Tuesday.  I even unlocked the door for him.  He was carrying a white plastic bag and I said to myself, "Ah.  The infamous birthday cake."  He left the bag on his desk.  Around 3:30 my boss, Jerry, comes in and says he wants to talk to me.  (The ploy to get me out of the workroom.)  But Bob says loudly, "Wait.  I've got the cake right here and we might as well give it to her now."  Oh yes!  I was laughing, but Jerry was not amused.  Bob says, "I hope you don't mind.  I bought it yesterday and forgot to put it in the refrigerator.  It was on the kitchen table all night.  And on the way to work the box got a little smashed.  He then pulled out the cake and put it on one of our book trucks.

I was laughing so hard.  I took pictures to show Joe because otherwise he wouldn't have believed me.

Liz (our Children's Librarian) comes into the workroom and asks what happened to the cake.  "I was so careful with it, even when I had to run for the bus," she said.  "No," says Bob.  "You didn't buy a cake.  I did."  It turns out that Diane was to buy the card and Liz was to buy the cake.  She talked about getting cupcakes because I really like cupcakes and Bob thought I deserved a cake.  So Liz went down to the lunchroom and brought up the cake she brought.

After the singing and blowing out the candle I decided to have a piece of each.  Bob's was yellow with chocolate icing.  Liz's was chocolate with strawberries in between the layers and chocolate icing (and chocolate covered strawberries).  They were both good, but I think I liked the strawberry one just a bit better.

  1. Both cakes look delicious. I would have had a piece of each too, though I really like the chocolate -
    strawberry combination. I sometimes order a 'black & pink' milkshake,explaining that it's chocolate +
strawberry.Sounds like you had a very happy birthday.
