NEW YEAR'S EVE AND NEW YEAR'S DAY

New Year's Eve started out as just another day.  But when I got to work some things were different.  For one thing, one of the Library Assistants called out sick.  For another there was no librarian.  Jerry was on vacation and Liz had to call out because her car had been broken into.  We were able to borrow a librarian from the Kensington Branch to help us out.

It was an early day.  We got out at 3:00 p.m.  That was nice.  Diane and I went to Shop Rite.  We were each going to get only a few things and ended up with two shopping carts full.  Diane doesn't drive or have a car so when she has a chance to go shopping, she fills up on stuff.  I don't blame her one bit.

I got salmon for dinner.  We usually have fish for dinner on New Year's Eve.  I served it with potato salad and sliced tomatoes.  It was really good.  And a last chance to use my Christmas plates for this year.

We burned our bayberry candle.  It is supposed to be good luck to burn a bayberry candle on New Year's Eve.  The old saying goes:
A bayberry candle burned down to the socket
Brings food to the larder and money to the pocket.

Well, it burned down to the socket all right.  It shattered the glass candleholder it was in.  Oh, well.  I got it at the dollar store, so I can always go get another one.

We watched TV while we snacked on chips and salsa and crackers and pepperoni and cheese.  At 11:30 p.m. we turned on the broadcast from Penn's Landing here in Philly and watched the countdown and the fireworks from the Delaware River.

Needless to say I slept in the next morning.  I ended up spending most of the day watching old TV shows and cleaning up for the company we were expecting.

Around 5:30 p.m. our friends Carole and Walt came over for dinner.  We almost always spend New Year's Day with them.  I made a pork roast, roasted potatoes and green bean casserole.  Everything turned out so good.  I had an apple pie for dessert.  We were all stuffed.

It has been a good holiday and I have had a wonderful week.  Now it's back to the real world.

  1. Sounds like you brought the new year in with a bang! The food sounds so good. I enjoy the holidays, but to be honest, I am glad it is over and we can stop stressing over food, decorations, presents, etc. I pray you and your hubby have the best new year ever. God bless.

  2. I think your resolution is so wise. I have trouble remembering to write the new year.Besides, all of us make resolutions that are (be honest!) we do not manage to keep for more than a week or two. My resolution?
To spend more time with my Lord.

  3. Oh my dear Kathy, don't get mad, but I laughed about you burning that candle so low. I loved the poem. If it is true, you should have lots of food and money. Bless your heart. My gosh your work place sounds like you need some back ups. Isn't that the way of it. With all the flus and illnesses going around it may be that way for two more months. Take care of yourself. xoxo,Susie

    1. We used to have three Library Assistants, one Librarian and one guard at the branch. Now we have six Library Assistants, two Librarians and two guards. We are getting geared up to be open six days a week instead of five. But... there's always that time when more than one person is out at a time. I'm next in line to the librarians, so if both of them are out, I'm in charge. That seldom happens though.
