THE EASTER EGG

Every year Joe gives me an egg for Easter.  And not just any egg, these are beautiful painted eggs.  This is the first one that he gave me.  I saw it where I keep it on the buffet yesterday and decided to display it on the table right inside my front door so I could see it when I first walked in.

This is a Ukrainian egg.  It is made by blowing out the inside of an egg and then drawing a design in wax using a fine pen on the egg.  This keeps part of it white.  Then it is dipped in a light dye (usually yellow).  The part to be kept yellow is then covered in wax like the white part was.  It is then dipped again in a darker colored dye.  It goes on like this until the design is completed.

This design is on the front and the back.

The decorative band goes around the edge.
It is a very intricate decoration and takes a lot of time to do.  I'm so careful not to break it.

Easter is coming quickly and I hope to show you more decorations this week.  I'm getting there!
